How can cannabis oil improve wound healing compared to medications like antibiotics? This is what a recent study published in Narra J hopes to address as a team of researchers from Indonesia investigated the effects of hemp seed oil on wound healing compared to medications. This study has the potential to help researchers, medical professionals, legislators, and the public better understand the health benefits of cannabis oil compared to medications.
For the study, the researchers conducted laboratory experiments using 36 mice that were divided into three study groups: negative control (NC; no treatment of any kind), positive control (PC; treated with an antibiotic), and treatment group (TG; treated with hemp seed oil). Mice wounds were evaluated on day 14 and 21 for wound size and rate of healing, with the TG mice exhibiting the smallest wound sizes and fastest healing rates compared to the NC and PC mice.
The study’s conclusions note, “Hemp seed oil demonstrated significant potential in accelerating wound healing processes, particularly in promoting wound size reduction, epithelialization, granulation tissue formation, and vascularization, indicating a superior effect compared to chloramphenicol ointment. Hemp seed oil may be considered a promising adjunct or alternative treatment for wound management, particularly for patients seeking natural and cost-effective options. Nevertheless, further research is required to assess its effectiveness and safety in managing wounds in humans.”
This study builds on several past studies examining the use of hemp seed oil combinations and wound healing, with this study being the first to examine hemp seed oil alone. With these promising results, this could open the door for using hemp seed oil as a substitute for medications in wound healing, specifically regarding the speed and efficiency of wound recovery.
What new connections between cannabis oil and wound healing will researchers make in the coming years and decades? Only time will tell, and this is why we science!
As always, keep doing science & keep looking up!
