How can cannabidiol (CBD) help contribute to skin care, specifically regarding acne and psoriasis? This is what a recent study published in the journal Biomolecules hopes to address as a team of researchers investigated the health benefits of CBD on a variety of cosmetic treatments. This study has the potential to help researchers, legislators, and the public better understand the positive health benefits of CBD for skin care compared to medications. This study comes CBD continues to make headways into medical, commercial, and industrial applications.
For the study, the researchers conducted a literature review regarding the use of CBD in skin care and cosmetic science, including skin health, anti-inflammatory, moisturizing, and antioxidant properties. Additionally, the researchers explored physicochemical properties of CBD, CBD biological effects on the skin, and CBD skin delivery systems. In the end, the researchers found that CDB contains many positive benefits for skin health and protection.
The study notes in its conclusions, “Although CBD exhibits promising therapeutic potential, the use of CBD in dermatology and cosmetics remains constrained by several factors, including suboptimal physicochemical characteristics, limited transdermal permeability, the absence of standardised formulations, and variability in regulatory frameworks. Additionally, safety concerns and the need for more robust clinical evidence persist.”
This study comes as the CBD skincare industry is estimated to reach $5.68 billion by 2032, with North America being the dominating region. As noted in the study, CBD is valued due to its anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and moisturizing properties. However, the study also notes further research is needed to better understand the long-term effects of CBD, specifically during pregnancy, and which types of products would be best for consumers.
What new connections between cannabis and skin care will researchers make in the coming years and decades? Only time will tell, and this is why we science!
As always, keep doing science & keep looking up!
