The growth of the cannabis / hemp industries in the United States has been tremendous. Legalization efforts continue in many states with a consistent eye on Federal legalization. As a gauge of demand and growth, the amount of acreage devoted to hemp growth according to estimates was in excess of 285,000 acres in 2020. Much like other industries, the understanding and application of analytical techniques to measure quality and safety of cannabis / hemp products will continue to evolve. It is a predictable occurrence that the supply chain will get more complicated. Developing and validating harmonized, standardized methods and specifications for cannabis / hemp is a priority for successful development and commercialization of consumer-friendly products. The purpose of this talk is to give a high-level overview of the analytical challenges the industry faces and how they relate to the market in general. Successful commerce depends on product confidence. the measurement and characterization of cannabis hemp products. This will form the framework for building consumer confidence.
