Consumer, Household, and Industrial (CH&I) formulations have increasingly driven towards more environmentally acceptable ingredients within water-based formulations, microbial control strategies have become an ever more critical component to successful manufacturing of these products. Many of the historical preservative strategies have come under pressure by regulatory agencies, non-governmental organizations, or driven by market trends. The Consumer Speciality Products Association’s Microbiology Preservative Subcommittee (MPS) was established to develop industry relevant guidance to address the increasing concern for microbiological quality within CH&I products. To further support these goals, a Preservation Stewardship Task Force was commissioned to communicate the necessity of effective preservation within the CH&I industries. This presentation will provide an overview of the MPS’ mission, review MPS’ recent accomplishments, and discuss MPS’ future initiatives to advocate for the responsible use of preservatives for protection of CH&I products.
